Every recovered batch of vanadium, molybdenum, cobalt, nickel, tungsten or titanium carries a digital product passport: assay, mass-balance, certificate of analysis and full custody history, signed at each step and checkable with a phone tap. No app, no login, no trust required in the seller's paperwork.

Recovered metal competes against primary metal on a market that pays for certainty. Buyers of recycled units routinely cannot verify origin or purity independently: they receive a PDF certificate, a scanned lab report and an assurance that the two belong together.
Paperwork is forgeable and so are the QR codes stuck on top of it. A printed code can be photographed and reprinted onto any drum; a document can be edited after the fact and nobody downstream can tell.
Meanwhile, measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) expectations keep rising. Buyers, regulators and financiers are asking for evidence trails that hold up to inspection, not attestations that hold up to a glance.
The VeriV batch passport
Each batch gets a passport backed by an NFC tag using NXP NTAG 424 DNA chips. Every tap generates a SUN one-time code, so a copied tag reads as a replay and fails verification. Any smartphone can read it.
The passport carries:
- Source assay
- what came in, measured and recorded at intake.
- Mass-balance
- tailings and losses accounted for, so recovered mass reconciles against feed.
- Certificate of analysis
- final purity, tied to the same batch identity as the assay that preceded it.
- Custody history
- who held the batch, when, and through which transit legs.
Each of these is signed with ECDSA-P256 in line with ISO/IEC 20248:2022, a standard VeriV's implementation is conformant with and has been independently reviewed against — developed through co-research and testing with a co-author of the standard since 2017. Signing happens at a human gate: a named person approves the record before it becomes part of the passport.
The pipeline
Material moves through a defined sequence of signed stages — from batch initialisation and source assay, through processing and final purity certification, to logistics and end-of-life audit — and every stage is approved by a named human signer before the batch moves on. Where AI assists analysis along the way, it is assistive only: it flags, a person signs.
The end-of-life stage closes the circular loop: recovered material re-enters as new feedstock with its history intact rather than as an anonymous input.

Why it can't be quietly altered
The ledger is append-only: a record can be superseded or disputed on the record, but never silently replaced or deleted.
Four security gates run on every verification, including clone detection and impossible-travel checks, so a duplicated tag or a batch that appears in two places at once is flagged rather than accepted.
Disputes have a defined path: a formal dispute window with bounded extensions and an independent arbitration route, so a challenge can neither be ignored nor stalled indefinitely.

Where the platform stands
VeriV is a working platform, demonstrated end-to-end at veriv.io — batch creation through to verification by phone, on serverless AWS infrastructure. We assess it at TRL 6–7: proven in a relevant environment, not yet a decade of production tonnage behind it. ISO 27001 certification is a roadmap commitment rather than a current claim. We would rather you knew that before a pilot than after one.
